Description:

This project is being undertaken as a part of the Healthier757 VDH Grant which began in 2024-25 and continues into the current fiscal year.


Context / Problem Statement

Reduce breast cancer mortality rates by increasing mammography screenings (primarily at Bon Secours Imaging Centers but also Sentara Mobile Unit). Addresses barriers to screening access, awareness, and education—particularly among Black women in Portsmouth, which has the highest breast cancer mortality rate in Hampton Roads.  


Program Components

  • Outreach events through Healthy Portsmouth.
  • Strengthen community engagement, guide women to mammography appointments at Bon Secours
  • Promotional campaigns (digital, print, social) with City of Portsmouth and Bon Secours.
  • QR-code collateral linking to RFHL breast cancer and women’s health resources and Bon Secours scheduling.
  • Integrate use of RFHL (videos, QR codes, cards, etc.) in Bon Secours Imaging Centers and partner locations.


Partnerships & Funding

  • Healthier757 VDH Grant
  • Healthy Portsmouth, Bon Secours, Portsmouth Health Department, ODU Nursing, City of Portsmouth, Healthier757. There will be a request for Bon Secours for $20,000 to support the initiative in 2025.


Impact Goals / Metrics

Reach 500+ women by Q1 2026, increase scheduling and RFHL sign-ups by 25%, and establish scalable model for Bon Secours Imaging Centers across Hampton Roads.


Status / Timeline

Approved by Bon Secours and now in planning and design phase. Mammography outreach led by Healthy Portsmouth is scheduled for the remainder of 2025. Expanded marketing support is needed from the City of Portsmouth.


We want to be ready for October - Breast Cancer Awareness month. Also a major event on 10/ at the Imaging Centers.
