“Healthier Hampton Roads” Campaign Launched to Improve Health Literacy, Workforce Productivity, and Economic Prosperity in the Region

Launch Announced at Hampton Roads Health Literacy Community Leadership Forum Hosted by Old Dominion University, EdLogics, and Global Action Platform
July 10, 2019

NORFOLK, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A campaign to launch a community-wide initiative, “Healthier Hampton Roads,” was announced at the Hampton Roads Health Literacy Community Leadership Forum on June 21, 2019 at Old Dominion University.

The initiative is a partnership between EdLogics, a digital health communications company focused on transforming the way people learn about health, Old Dominion University and Global Action Platform and designed to increase health literacy, workforce productivity, and economic prosperity throughout Hampton Roads.

This invitation-only forum of thought leaders across the Hampton Roads community identified the importance of improving health literacy because of its significant impact on the health and lives of our citizens, healthcare costs, and the long-term economic prosperity in the region. Health literacy is one of the strongest predictors of an individual’s health status, and federal reports indicate that poor health knowledge costs the U.S. economy as much as $238 billion annually. Those with lower health literacy have higher mortality rates, more hospital stays, and more emergency room visits.

Governor Tommy Thompson, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and former Governor of Wisconsin, and Chairman of EdLogics made the call to action: “Healthier Hampton Roads will be a multi-stakeholder, integrated, community-based program that bridges the work site, home, and community,” he said. “It will connect all of Hampton Roads through an interactive digital health platform that provides a vehicle for increasing awareness, communication, education, engagement, and behavior change.”

According to Jim Spore, president and CEO for Reinvent Hampton Roads, “It’s all about the workforce – quantity, availability, and quality. Quality includes health of the workforce, as well as skills and productivity.” He added, “79 percent of businesses cite a healthy workforce as a key factor in guiding a location choice for expansion and new facilities, and 98 percent of businesses say that knowledge of an at-risk healthcare population with high rates of chronic conditions prevents them from building and expanding in that location.”

Spore also reported that healthcare experts in Hampton Roads identify mental health, opioid abuse, and chronic condition management as critical needs that must be addressed in our region.” On a positive note, he noted, “Cities in Hampton Roads have very high rates of digital media use and are poised to benefit from digital health literacy resources.”

“Improving health literacy is a key requirement for achieving behavior change, reducing healthcare costs, and improving health outcomes,” said Thomas M. Chamberlain, PharmD, founder and CEO of EdLogics. “Achieving behavior change at a community level requires people and organizations coming together through collaborative coalitions involving corporations, municipalities, non-profit organizations, health systems, universities, school systems, faith-based institutions, foundations, and philanthropists. Such collaboration is a key goal for “Healthier Hampton Roads.”

ODU’s College of Health Sciences and Strome Entrepreneurial Center/Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) sponsored the Forum on behalf of ODU. “We share the vision of Healthier Hampton Roads, EdLogics, and Global Action Platform since healthcare is rapidly being transformed through innovation. A healthy population and community have a direct impact on our region’s overall prosperity, workforce development, and economic growth.” said Nancy Grden, executive director, Strome Entrepreneurial Center.

“In today’s highly competitive global economy, health is a key economic driver,” said Scott T. Massey, PhD, chairman and CEO of Global Action Platform. “Healthy citizens are more productive, more creative, and provide a competitive advantage for any regional economy dedicated to growth and shared prosperity. Global Action Platform is working with EdLogics as a strategic partner to launch Healthier Hampton Roads and help build a new national model that can be created first here, replicated in our headquarters city of Nashville, and then shared nationally.”

Featured Forum speakers included:

  • Governor Tommy G. Thompson, Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Former Governor of Wisconsin, and Chairman of EdLogics

EdLogics and REMWorks® Sleep Store Aim to Cut Healthcare Costs by Promoting Better Sleep

April 25, 2016

Highmark Inc’s REMWorks Sleep Store and EdLogics are seeking to improve health literacy and reduce medical claims through educational games and cash incentives

PITTSBURGH, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EdLogics, a health education-based consumer engagement company and innovator in game-based learning, has collaborated with REMWorks Sleep Store to improve consumer knowledge of the importance of quality sleep. Through this initiative, EdLogics and REMWorks have developed an incentivized, game-based health education platform that aims to improve sleep quality and teach consumers how to manage sleep health and associated costly health conditions.

REMWork and @EdLogics are seeking to improve health literacy and reduce medical claims through incentives.

"Quality sleep is a huge factor in an employee's health and work productivity. By providing sleep health tips and tools, and incentivizing individuals to learn about the importance of sleep, we may prevent future health problems and costly claims down the road," says Katie Colborn, Sales Manager of REMWorks Sleep Store. "EdLogics is the perfect fit to provide engaging education for our customers."

Allegheny County of Pennsylvania employees were the first to enroll in this new program from REMWorks. The need for a platform targeting sleep improvement is clear: the Epworth Sleepiness Assessment showed that 38.1 percent of employees experience excessive daytime sleepiness, and the Stop Bang Sleep Assessment showed that 59.8 percent are at risk for sleep apnea. Only 8.5% of employees reported they felt confident making decisions regarding their health.

The EdLogics platform is making a difference. Allegheny County employees scored an average of 67% on the sleep health baseline knowledge assessment, which measures health knowledge before going through the sleep health education program. By completing activities and games and learning strategies for better sleep, employees increased their average score to 95 percent on the sleep health final knowledge assessment – an increase of 42 percent.

Since Allegheny County launched the REMWorks program on September 1, 2015, employee feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Using the health literacy platform resulted in employee’s commitment to positive behavior changes – over 70 percent said they will change their behavior based on what they learned. A person's behavior has a stronger impact on health than almost any other factor, so a widespread commitment to positive behavior changes could have a lasting impact on future health claims.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE--EdLogics, a market-leading innovator in improving health literacy and consumer engagement, is partnering with PatientBond, a leader in patient communications and statistically-based consumer profiling, to optimize consumer engagement and health outcomes for healthcare payers, providers and employers.

Insights into improving health literacy | Find @c2b_solutions, @PatientBond in booth 4674 at #HIMSS16 #lasvegas

EdLogics’ comprehensive consumer engagement solution is focused on improving health literacy by simplifying critical health information, enabling consumers with different learning styles and reading abilities to understand their role in managing common and costly health conditions. EdLogics’ creative approach to integrating interactive multimedia learning programs, gamification, incentives and rewards into a fun and engaging learning experience, is being delivered through employers, insurers, and health care organizations throughout the country.

PatientBond uses a highly predictive, psychographic segmentation model to identify more effective ways of motivating positive health behaviors among healthcare consumers based on their attitudes, priorities and health personalities. PatientBond then delivers customized communications to healthcare consumers based on these insights, using channels such as email, text messages and phone calls, to address important issues like medication adherence, hospital readmission avoidance and wellness education.

As former U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary and Governor of Wisconsin, Tommy Thompson has always seen the need to bring innovative companies together to educate consumers and improve public health. Thompson has been an active and vocal advocate for improving health literacy and developing revolutionary ways to enhance patient engagement. “It’s well established that people who are engaged in and understand their health have fewer hospital admissions, less ER visits and better outcomes. Companies like EdLogics empower those individuals to make better healthcare decisions and live healthier lives,” stated Thompson.

Thompson is familiar with PatientBond through Casey Albertson, President of PatientBond, when Albertson was an executive at Procter & Gamble in its Healthcare Division. Albertson had been leading work to strengthen physician/patient relationships through personalized care.

“Governor Thompson made the connection between EdLogics and PatientBond, recognizing that PatientBond’s outbound communications system is unique and can accelerate healthcare consumer participation with the EdLogics platform,” explained Albertson.

Tom Chamberlain, Pharm.D, Founder and CEO of EdLogics said they will use PatientBond’s software platform to engage consumers via text, email and voicemail with messaging that is customized based on user preferences and their psychographic profile.

“Edlogics provides one of the most advanced consumer health education and engagement platforms available. We combine the power of multimedia educational videos with interactive game-based learning, challenges and unique incentive strategies to improve user’s understanding of key health issues and encourage them to become more responsible healthcare consumers,” said Chamberlain. “The improvements that we are seeing in engagement and learning are dramatic and very encouraging.”

“Combining the strengths of these two companies is the kind of innovation we need to make a real impact on health outcomes in the United States,” stated Thompson.

Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson Brings the Companies Together to Change Consumer Behavior
